Marriage Is Vanishing, Just Not for Everyone

tl;dr

The U.S. marriage rate has fallen 26% since 2000, and a new NBER paper argues the iPhone is responsible for up to half the drop in U.S. births. Testing the actual mechanism against 20 years of American Time Use Survey microdata, state marriage rates, and phone-ownership data, it doesn't hold up the way the headline suggests. Married share of same-sex couples has nearly tripled over the same stretch straight marriage cratered: same phones, same apps, opposite direction.
